Metanoisia is an online space for musicians to explore improvisation to moving images. The videos include ambient soundscapes that provide harmonic support in the form of modal scale suggestions.

Suggested guidelines for use:

  1. The components can be combined in various ways according to the intentions of the players.

  2. The scale modes heard in the ambient soundtracks are suggestions only. There is no requirement to strictly adhere to them.

  3. Players decide, through democratic discussion, on which components to include in a given performance.

  4. The films provide a measurable performance time. However, their primary purpose is to provide a subjective focal point for musical gestural conversation, there is no requirement to perform directly in response to them: they can additionally be used as a reflective tool to inspire a performance without the use of the filmic images (although the images provide an interactive element for audience engagement).

  5. Each performance, being unique, is co-authored equally by performers taking part. Consequently they are encouraged to register the percentage share of the work with their PRO.

  6. The acknowledgment of nature’s contribution as a co-author is suggested. This can take the form of an equal share in the intellectual property (IP) in the performance, either in the form a performance or master recording that is monetised, or in print or promotional material.

  7. A key aspect of the processes involved in MMC performance is the embracing of egalitarian ideals: decision making regarding how best to exploit or apply the MMC components in a given performance must be agreed democratically through collaboration in an atmosphere of non-hierarchical equality. All players have equal status.
